Battle of Cable Street, 75th anniversary

At the beginning of October, there is to be a series of events commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street in the East End, when local people joined together to prevent Moseley's Fascists from marching through a predominantly Jewish area.

Are you wondering why I have put this on my textile blog? Because I have been invited to do a craft stall during this Festival. I am REALLY HONOURED to have been asked to do this, can you IMAGINE how pleased I was to be invited to do a stall at this wonderful festival. I hope people who are readng this can come along and support the festival, even if they don't buy my stuff!!

12 noon – 6pm Stalls along Graces Alley by campaigning groups, local organisations and supporters with street theatre and music by La Columna, The Lost Marbles, The Fairly Fresh Fish Co, Klezmania and The Cockney Awkestra.


12 noon – 10pm Protest & Survive Exhibition with photography documenting the Battle, posters from the Spanish Civil War, images recording the past 25 years of protest against racial discrimination by Phil Maxwell and portraits of the diverse communities of the East End today by documentary photographers Kalin Coromina, Ned Dyke-Coomes, Zane Mellupe, Lydia Polzer, Ben Speck and Neil White

First of all, I made this Shetland Lace scarf in one colour....I love this shade of orange, it's not one I use very often!

And then two more stripy scarves....

A Fair Isle beret.

Hat and scarf set in the wonderful Manos del Uruguay (mixture of wool and silk, handspun by a women's co-operative in Uruguay.

Women's Institute Craft Day at Women's Library, 12 Feb

Join this special day to celebrate the crafts activities of The Women's Institute. The Women's Library holds the archives of the National Federation of Women's Institutes which were catalogued and made accessible to the public in 2004.

This day will bring together members of the WI from different federations to provide a historical context to WI crafts programmes, and the role that the WI has played in saving traditional crafts. It will also demonstrate some of the contemporary work of the WI and provide an opportunity to learn more with stalls, display and demonstrations including patchwork quilting, knitting, lacework, and

Hand Made Tales, curated by Carol Tulloch, is a timely exhibition focusing on the role domestic crafts play in many women’s experiences. It draws on the connections between the current revival of domestic crafts such as sewing, gardening, and cooking and the historical roots of the domestic arts within the home. The exhibition will allow visitors to explore and learn the stories of crafts and the women involved in them through personal tales and fun interactive projects. Come and discover treasures that share the intimate bond between generations from the once mundane to the now treasured heirlooms of families past.
